neumann on ego identified with power

Posted by rigorousm on November 24, 2014

The ego remained a victim of unconscious forces…. It was subject to and dominated by these forces and instincts, which took possession in the form of sexuality, lust for power, cruelty, hunger, fear and superstition. The ego was their instrument and was totally unaware that it was, in fact, possessed, since it lived them out blindly, unable to interpose any kind of distance between itself and the power which had taken possession of it.

— Erich Neumann, quoted in Marion Woodman’s Addiction to Perfection: the still unravished bride, p 138.
