Filler on self-destructive memoirs

Posted by rigorousm on September 23, 2014

“[Libeskind’s] rather premature 2004 autobiography, Breaking Ground, may well become for architecture buffs what Alma Mahler Gropius Werfel’s 1958 memoir, And the Bridge Is Love, is for music lovers — an enduring camp classic. Despite their authors’ very different life stories, Mahler and Libeskind share an unmitigated self-regard coupled with a stunning lack of self-awareness. Although that combination of narcissistic traits is far from uncommon (among architects as much as artistic adventuresses), it is rare for books that are so transparently exercises in spin control to show off their authors so unfavorably.”
