quotes: postmodern tendencies

Posted by rigorousm on January 12, 2011

What characterizes much of [Barthelme’s] fiction, and art that critics would later call “postmodern,” is a tendency to view culture as a series of signs– guideposts to the nation’s hidden roads– and to suggest possible (but not authoritative) readings of the messages written there. The signs are incomplete, hastily made, and they could be wrong.

— Tracy Daugherty, Hiding Man p. 129.
